You add ~ to many short adjectives to form superlatives. For example, the superlative of ‘nice’ is ‘nicest’; the superlative of ‘happy’ is ‘happiest’. You also add it to some adverbs that do not end in -ly. For example, the superlative of ‘soon’ is ‘soonest’.
