ADAPA

[Mesopotamian] In Babylonian mythology, the son of the god Ea, the god of wisdom, and priest-king of Eridu, the oldest city of the Babylonians. Ea gave Adapa knowledge but not eternal life. When one day Ea, who was also a fisherman, shipwrecked on the cliffs, Adapa caught him and broke one of his wings. For this deed he had to account before the supreme god Anu in heaven. His father misled him about the correct behavior in heaven, so that Adapa did not receive eternal life as he had hoped. Adapa is also the name of one of the seven Apkallu, the wisest of men. He was a priest in the temple of Ea at the city of Eridu, and a favorite of Ea.
