FLYING DUTCHMAN

Meaning of FLYING DUTCHMAN in English

[Folklore] The Flying Dutchman ("De Vliegende Hollander") is a ghost ship in nautical legend which sails in the vicinity of the Cape of Good Hope. In this version, a Dutch mariner attempted to sail the cape in a storm and he uttered various blasphemous oaths in the presence of God. For this he was doomed to sail the cape for all eternity. Another version tells of the captain who sails aimlessly on the North Sea, dicing with the devil for his soul. The term also refers to a haunted figure.
