PILLARS OF HERCULES

[Greek] The rocky heights on both sides of the Straits of Gibraltar. In one tradition, it was Heracles who broke through the mountain barrier which had locked the Mediterranean, thus creating the outlet to the ocean. One of the pillars is called Capi, while the other, the opposite promontory in Africa (Jebel Musa, or Apes' Hill) was anciently called Abyla.
