SUBDUCTION ZONE

According to the theory of Plate Tectonics, a region at the boundary of two of the plates that form the crust of the earth where one of the plates is forced downward into the mantle. The deep ocean trenches off the Pacific coasts of Mexico and South America are examples of these regions. These zones are also referred to as Convergent Plate Boundaries.
