The dividing point, caused by changing latitudes or altitudes, between areas with environmental conditions supporting trees and those that do not. The tree line in North America defined by latitude runs across northern Canada. Tree lines also exist at lower latitudes because of the altitudes in such places as in the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
