CODEC (ENCODER/DECODER)

A process or device by which or in which a signal is encoded for transmission or storage, then decoded for playback. As a process it is the algorithm that handles the compression and decompression of video or audio files. As a device it could be a box or computer card that accomplishes the encode/decode process.
