(1622–73) a French actor and writer of plays whose real name was Jean-Baptiste Poquelin. He is best known as a writer of comedies (↑ comedy ) that make fun of human behaviour, such as Le Misanthrope , Tartuffe , and Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme .
