(1688–1766) the son of the British king James II, sometimes also called the Old Pretender, and the father of ↑ Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Edward ↑ Stuart ). He believed he had the right to be the British king instead of King George I, but his attempt to become king, during the first ↑ Jacobite Rising of 1715–16, was a failure.
