The name given to the possible climatic effect resulting from a nuclear war. In the 1980's it was hypothesized that vast quantities of dust and soot would be injected into the atmosphere by a nuclear war and its aftermath. These particles would block out the Sun for an extended period of time, creating a "winter" climate over the whole Earth.
