IN NOMINE

Meaning of IN NOMINE in English

in music, English instrumental genre of the 16th and 17th centuries, named after the setting by John Taverner (c. 14901545) of the In nomine Domini (In the name of the Lord) section from the Benedictus of the Missa Gloria tibi Trinitas. Taverner's work served as a model for similar compositions based on the plainsong melody of the antiphon (a verse originally sung before and after a psalm) Gloria tibi Trinitas (Glory to Thee, O Trinity) from the Vesper service for Trinity Sunday. Although instrumental styles changed, the title and cantus firmus remained in use until the time of Henry Purcell (c. 165995).
