any member of the family Linyphiidae (order Araneida), a rather common group of spiders numbering about 2,000 species. They occur worldwide. Most are less than 6 millimetres (1/4 inch) in length and are seldom seen. Their webs are flat and sheetlike or dome-shaped. The spider is found usually on the lower side of the web. The hammock spider (Linyphia phrygiana), native to North America, builds a hammock-shaped web.
