FREE WATER SURFACE (FWS) CONSTRUCTED WETLAND

Meaning of FREE WATER SURFACE (FWS) CONSTRUCTED WETLAND in English

A type of constructed wetland, a man-made marsh-like area used to treat wastewater. In this type of wetland, the effluent flows through various aquatic plants, with the water level exposed to the air. While this type of wetland is relatively easy to construct, it is not as effective as the Subsurface Flow (SF) Constructed Wetland with respect to associated odors, potential for insect breeding, and risk of public exposure and contact with the water in the system.
