The range extends about 1,200 mi (2,000 km) in a southeast-northwest direction from the Gobi Desert to the western Siberian plain through parts of China, Mongolia, Russia, and Kazakhstan. The highest point is the Russian peak Belukha, roughly 15,000 ft (4,600 m) in elevation. The mountains are the source of the Irtysh and Ob rivers and are notable for their mining and hydroelectrical potential.
