HOOVER COMMISSION


Meaning of HOOVER COMMISSION in English

(1947–49, 1953–55) Advisory body headed by former Pres.

Herbert Hoover to examine the organization of the U.S. executive branch. The first commission, officially titled the Commission on Organization of the U.S. Executive Branch, was appointed by Pres. Harry Truman to reduce the number of federal government departments. Recommendations from this and a second commission appointed by Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower were largely adopted. Some agencies were consolidated and new bodies were created, including the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare and the General Services Administration.
