AMYRTAEUS OF SAIS

Meaning of AMYRTAEUS OF SAIS in English

Egyptian king whose reign (404399 BC) constituted the entire 28th dynasty. He was possibly a relative of the Amyrtaeus who had earlier aided Inaros, a Libyan prince who had attempted to oust the Achaemenians from the Nile Delta (Lower Egypt). In 404 Amyrtaeus of Sais successfully led a revolt against Achaemenian control of the delta and finally gained control of all of Upper Egypt in 400. Although his rule was plagued by insurrections, the Achaemenians were unable to regain power. Amyrtaeus left no monuments, and very little detailed information is known about his reign. According to a late Egyptian tradition, he in some way transgressed the law, and thus his son was not allowed to succeed him.
