born July 16, 1486, Florence died Sept. 28, 1530, Florence original name Andrea d'Agnolo Italian painter and draftsman whose works of exquisite composition and craftsmanship were instrumental in the development of the Florentine-Roman school in the first half of the 16th century. His most striking among other well-known works is the series of frescoes on the life of St. John the Baptist about 1511 and completed in 1526. John K.G. Shearman Additional reading Sydney J. (1965), are well-illustrated monographs containing references to earlier writings; the selected bibliography in the former is especially useful. Each contains a catalogue raisonn of paintings; the second has in addition a separate catalog of drawings and register of documents. There are significant differences of opinion as to attributions, chronology, and general assessment.
