Modern Greek Argoliks Klpos, deep inlet of the Mirtn Sea, a western arm of the Aegean, eastern Peloponnese, Greece; it is separated from the Gulf of Saroniks by the Argols peninsula. Some 30 miles (50 km) long and 20 miles (30 km) wide, it includes some small islands off the eastern shore, notably Psil and Plati. At the head of the gulf are its principal port, Nauplia, and the mouth of the nakhos River. Just north of the head of the gulf is rgos (q.v.), an important Mycenaean and Dorian centre continuously occupied since the Early Bronze Age (c. 3500 BC). At the entrance to the gulf is the island of Sptsai, an Athenian summer resort.
