city, in the highlands of west central So Paulo state, Brazil, at 1,847 ft (563 m) above sea level. It was given town status in 1915 and was made the seat of a municipality in 1938. Assis processes coffee, cotton, corn (maize), and rice and produces furniture and liquor. The city is easily reached by airplane, train, or automobile from So Paulo, the state capital, 250 mi (400 km) east-southeast. Pop. (1980 prelim.) 57,217.
