Cecilius Calvert studied at Trinity College, Oxford, and married Anne Arundell, daughter of the 2nd Baron Arundell of Wardour, a Roman Catholic peer. The charter for Maryland was issued on June 20, 1632, two months after his father's death, and he received it as the 2nd Baron Baltimore. He never visited the New World himself but instead entrusted governorship of the colony to his younger brother, Leonard Calvert (160647). During this period the Calverts sought to establish freedom of conscience in the colony for both Roman Catholics and Protestants who accepted the doctrine of the Trinity.
