born Aug. 7, 1868, London, Eng. died Oct. 11, 1946, London English composer known especially for his large-scale works in the grand manner. After preparing for the Indian civil service, Bantock studied at Trinity College of Music, London, and the Royal Academy of Music, London. He was active as a conductor, founded and edited the New Quarterly Music Review (189396), and succeeded Sir Edward Elgar as professor of music at the University of Birmingham (190734). Most of his orchestral works are program music in which Oriental and Celtic themes recur. Among his principal works are the massive Omar Khayyam (190609), for solo voices, chorus, and orchestra; Atalanta in Calydon (1911) and Vanity of Vanities (1913), for unaccompanied voices; the Hebridean Symphony (1916); and the large tone poems Fifne at the Fair (1912) and Dante and Beatrice (1910).
