BAYLEBRIDGE, WILLIAM

born Dec. 12, 1883, Brisbane, Queen., Australia died May 7, 1942, Sydney pseudonym of Charles William Blocksidge poet and short-story writer considered one of the leading writers of Australia in his day. The son of an auctioneer, he was educated in Brisbane, then at the age of 25 went to England, where he published his first booklet of verse, Songs o' the South (1908). He also travelled to France and Egypt. He returned to Australia in 1919 and published more than 20 books and booklets of verse in private, limited editions. His work leans heavily on Elizabethan and German models. The best known volumes of his verse are Love Redeemed (1934) and This Vital Flesh (1939); some excellent short stories about World War I were collected in Anzac Muster (1921).
