born May 13, 1882, Argenteuil, Fr. died Aug. 31, 1963, Paris French painter, one of the important revolutionaries of 20th-century art who, together with Pablo Picasso, developed Cubism. His paintings consist primarily of still lifes, remarkable for their robust construction, low-keyed colour harmonies, and serene, meditative quality (e.g., Still Life with a Mandolin, 1935). Additional reading Standard biographies are John Russell, G. Braque (1959); and Jean Leymarie, Braque (1961), although both were written before the painter died. Edwin B. Mullins, The Art of Georges Braque (also published as Braque, 1968); and Bernard Zurcher, Georges Braque, Life and Work (1988), provide basic introductions to the subject.
