born November 1628, Elstow, Bedfordshire, Eng. died Aug. 31, 1688, London celebrated English minister and preacher, author of The Pilgrim's Progress (1678), the book that was the most characteristic expression of the Puritan religious outlook. His other works include doctrinal and controversial writings; a spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding (1666); and the allegory The Holy War (1682). by Thomas Babington Macaulay Macaulay apparently bore no ill will against Britannica from the days of his dispute with James and John Stuart Mill over the former's writings for the Supplement. For the Eighth Edition (1852-60) he wrote a number of biographies, each a work of high literary merit.
