CALUMET CITY


Meaning of CALUMET CITY in English

city, in Cook county, northeastern Illinois, U.S. It lies between the Little Calumet and Grand Calumet rivers, 4 miles (6 km) southeast of Lake Calumet. Settled in 1868, it was called West Hammond until 1924, when it was renamed for the waterways (Calumet being the name of the peace pipe of the local American Indians). It developed as a residential-industrial suburb of the Gary-Chicago metropolitan area. During the 1930s and '40s several nightclubsmost of them on State Street, known as the stripattracted notoriety as places of entertainment for conventioneers visiting Chicago and were a source of municipal discord. The city is now primarily residential, with some light manufacturing. Inc. village, 1893; city, 1924. Pop. (1990) 37,840; (1994 est.) 38,223.
