CHEERING

What follows is actually two articles, the first from the Eleventh Edition (1910-11), which was carried over into the Fourteenth in 1929, and the second a replacement piece that first appeared in 1960 and occasionally thereafter. The earlier version was unsigned; the later is credited to one Alexander McQueen. There is no evidence that either was offered with any hint of irony; nonetheless it is hard to read them now and not imagine that they are somehow parodies of a particular kind of scholarship. cheering--eleventh ed cheering--replacement
