segment of the Pacific Coast Ranges of western North America, extending eastward along the coast for about 300 miles (500 km) from Turnagain Arm of the Cook Inlet (Gulf of Alaska) to Cape Yakataga in southern Alaska, U.S. Many peaks exceed 11,000 feet (3,400 m), with Mount Marcus Baker (13,176 feet ) the highest. The south slope of the mountains, which were named after an Eskimo tribe, lies within the Chugach National Forest.
