CHULA VISTA

city, San Diego county, southern California, U.S., on the east shore of San Diego Bay, south of San Diego, and just north of Tijuana, Mex. Laid out in 1888 by the Santa Fe Railroad and named for its "pretty view," it developed as a citrus centre, later turning to truck gardening. Development of the aircraft industry in the San Diego area contributed to the city's residential growth. Southwestern College was established there in 1961. Inc. 1911. Pop. (1993 est.) 146,232.
