port on South Caicos Island and largest settlement in the Caicos Islands, part of the British colony of the Turks and Caicos Islands in the West Indies, north of Hispaniola. The settlement dates from 1850, when salt ponds were developed; it was the island's major exporter of salt until it became increasingly noncompetitive in the world market. Production ceased altogether in 1964. Crawfish and conch are processed for export. Pop. (1990) 1,198.
