public, coeducational institution of higher learning in Charleston, Ill., U.S. It is part of Illinois's Board of Governors of State Colleges and Universities system. The university is composed of the Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences, the colleges of Arts and Humanities, Sciences, and Education and Professional Studies, and the schools of Technology and Home Economics. In addition to undergraduate study, master's degree programs are available in a range of areas. Off-campus facilities are located in Champaign, Danville, Decatur, Olney, and Rantoul. Total enrollment exceeds 10,000. The university began as Eastern Illinois Normal School in 1895. The school became a state teachers college in 1921 and was renamed Eastern Illinois State College in 1947. Ten years later the college was elevated to university status.
