born Nov. 13, 1312, Windsor, Berkshire, Eng. died June 21, 1377, Sheen, Surrey Edward III, watercolour, 15th century; in the British Library (Cotton MS. Julius E. IV) byname Edward Of Windsor king of England from 1327 to 1377, who led England into the Hundred Years' War with France. The descendants of his seven sons and five daughters contested the throne for generations, climaxing in the Wars of the Roses (145585). Additional reading W. McKisack, The Fourteenth Century, 13071399 (1959), contains an excellent account; G. Unwin (ed.), Finance and Trade Under Edward III (1918), still useful; E. Perroy, La Guerre de cent ans (1945; The Hundred Years War, 1951), good for the French point of view.
