ETOBICOKE


Meaning of ETOBICOKE in English

city that, with the cities of North York, Scarborough, York, and Toronto, and the borough of East York, forms the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto, southeastern Ontario, Canada. It has an area of 49 square miles (127 square km) and is bordered north by Vaughan Township, east by the cities of Toronto, North York, and York, west by the city of Mississauga, and south by Lake Ontario. It was established on Jan. 1, 1967, through amalgamation of the former Township of Etobicoke (incorporated 1851), the former towns of New Toronto and Mimico, and the former village of Long Branch. The name Etobicoke, an Indian word meaning place where the alders grow, was originally given to Etobicoke Creek. There are about 1,600 acres (650 hectares) of parks. Industries are diversified and include a large tire and rubber plant. Pop. (1991) 309,993.
