municipally owned zoo and aquarium in Fort Worth, Texas, U.S. Opened in 1923, the 15-hectare (37-acre) zoo exhibits more than 2,000 specimens of some 500 species. The zoo's herpetarium has a large collection of reptiles and has bred, such endangered species as the bog turtle. The zoo also is noted for its collection of tropical birds. The James R. Record Aquarium was opened in 1954 as an extension of the zoo. Its collection contains more than 3,000 specimens of 320 fishes and other aquatic species. A notable feature of the aquarium is its geographic presentation of various fish groups, which shows the species most likely to be found in a particular region of the United States or the world.
