FOYT, A(NTHONY) J(OSEPH), (JR.)

born Jan. 16, 1935, Houston, Texas, U.S. versatile and successful American automobile racing driver, who won the Indianapolis 500 in 1961, 1964, 1967, and 1977, the first four-time winner. A racer from the age of 17 andunlike many driversan expert auto mechanic, he participated in his first Indianapolis race in 1958 and later in that year drove in the Monza (Italy) contest. He drove successfully in sports car and stock car racing. He was national champion stock car driver in 1968, 1978, and 1979.
