HATTERAS, CAPE

long, narrow, curved sandbar forming a promontory on Hatteras Island, North Carolina, U.S. It extends 70 miles (113 km) along the Outer Banks between the Atlantic Ocean, where treacherous shallows are a danger to navigation, and Pamlico Sound. Much of the area is included in Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
