Armitage's more systematic William Herschel (1962). A charming picture of his personality, with extensive quotations from manuscripts, is given in The Herschel Chronicle: The Life-Story of William Herschel and His Sister Caroline Herschel (1933), ed. by his granddaughter, Constance A. Lubbock. His complete published papers are reprinted in The Scientific Papers of Sir William Herschel, ed. by J.L.E. Dreyer, 2 vol. (1912); and the most significant are reprinted and critically analyzed by M.A. Hoskin in William Herschel and the Construction of the Heavens (1963).
