Among the historic landmarks treated in the article London of the 3rd edition (178897) of Encyclopdia Britannica were the Houses of Parliament, also called Westminster Palace. A fire in 1834 destroyed much of the complex described here, except for Westminster Hall and the House of Commons. The structure was rebuilt in the mid-19th century. Sections 128131 of that article are presented in modern typography for ease in reading but otherwise retain the original spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and italicsincluding typographical errors.
