born July 13, 1849, Stammheim, Switz. died April 23, 1923, Bern Swiss jurist and author of the Swiss civil code of 1912. In 1880 Huber became a professor of Swiss civil and federal law and legal history at Basel, and later (1888) he became a professor of German civil and state law at Halle. In 1892 he was commissioned to develop a Swiss civil code. He completed it in 1904, and it finally came into force in January 1912. From 1903 to 1911 he served as a member of the Swiss Nationalrat. As a federal legal counsel, he also represented Switzerland at The Hague Permanent Court of Arbitration. From 1892 to 1923 he occupied a professorial chair at Berne in civil law. Among his published writings, his System und Geschichte des schweizerischen Privatrechtes, 4 vol. (188693; History of Swiss Civil Law), a comprehensive study of the various cantonal legal systems, and Die Bedeutung der Gewere im deutschen Sachenrecht (1894; The Importance of Lawful Possession in German Legal Cases) are considered landmarks of legal research.
