any one of three areas created in Scotland by the administrative reorganization of 1975: Orkney, Shetland, and Western Isles, with a combined land area of 2,149 square miles (5,566 square km). Each islands area's authority combines most regional and district functions but is linked with the Highland region for police and fire services. Pop. (1987 est.) 72,815.
