town, southwestern Labrador, Newfoundland, Canada, near the Quebec border. It was developed in the 1950s as a planned community to serve the surrounding mining region (Carol Lake), one of Canada's largest producers of iron-ore concentrates and pellets. The community has an airport and rail connections with Schefferville, Que. (124 miles north), and with Sept-les, Que., the ore transshipment port, 200 miles (320 km) south at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River. Inc. 1961 as a local improvement district and in 1980 as a town. Pop. (1991) 9,061.
