private, coeducational institution of higher learning in Coral Gables, Fla., U.S. Through its 14 schools and colleges it offers comprehensive undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs, including schools of medicine, law, architecture, and marine and atmospheric science. The North-South Center is the research component of the Graduate School of International Studies. Other research facilities include centres and institutes for the study of aging, vision, and molecular and cellular evolution. Also notable is its range of programs for overseas study. Student enrollment is approximately 14,000. The University of Miami was chartered in 1925 and opened the following year. In its first 15 years of existence, the university floundered financially, undergoing bankruptcy and reorganization as a result of the Great Depression. Its rescue was aided by the origination, in 1933, of what became known as the Orange Bowl, a college football game played annually on New Year's Day (January 1). The School of Medicine opened in 1952 and was known for the development of hip-replacement surgery and eye surgery and eye-care procedures. Notable alumni of the university include photographers Arnold Newman and David Douglas Duncan.
