public, coeducational institution of higher learning in Greeley, Colo., U.S. It includes colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Health and Human Sciences, and Performing and Visual Arts. The university's graduate school offers about 35 master's degree programs and 18 doctoral programs. Near Estes Park is an 80-acre mountain campus operated by the university. Total enrollment is approximately 10,500. The university was established in 1889 as the State Normal (teacher-training) School. Instruction began in 1890. Then the school's mission was to train teachers for Colorado public schools. The normal school became Colorado State Teacher's College in 1911, when it offered a four-year undergraduate program culminating in a bachelor's degree. Its name was changed to Colorado State College in 1957. The college was granted university status in 1970, and it then settled upon its current name.
