ROGALAND

Meaning of ROGALAND in English

fylke (county), southwestern Norway. With an area of 3,529 square miles (9,141 square km), it lies between the North Sea (west) and the uplands of Bykleheiane and Rjuven (east). The principal coastal feature is the broad island-studded Bokna Fjord, the narrow and deep branches of which penetrate far inland. The fylke's three principal districts are Ryfylke, on the northern coast, mountainous with some cattle raising; Jren, a southwestern coastal lowland, one of the most important dairying districts of Norway; and Dalane, highlands in the south. Fishing is important all along the coast. Stavanger is the largest city and county seat. Other cities are Haugesund, Egersund, and Sandnes; all are fishing ports and light-industrial centres. Some copper is mined on Karmy island. Pop. (1988 est.) 329,630.
