SAO TOME, CAPE

Portuguese Cabo De So Tom, headland on the Atlantic coast of eastern Brazil, Rio de Janeiro state, 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Campos. It was formed by sediments deposited by the Paraba do Sul River, which discharges into the ocean at a point 25 miles (40 km) to the north. The cape was first sighted by Europeans in 1501.
