Modern Greek Saroniks Klpos, also called Gulf Of Aegina, gulf of the Aegean Sea between kra (cape) Sonion of the Attica peninsula and kra Skllaion of the Argolis peninsula of the Greek Peloponnese. A maximum of 50 mi (80 km) long northwestsoutheast and about 30 mi wide, it is linked on the west to the Gulf of Corinth by the Corinth Canal. At its widest point the gulf is divided by three of the Saronic islands: Salams, Ayina (Aegina), and Pros. Piraeus, the port of Athens and largest port of Greece, is situated due east of Salams; the ports of Elevss and Mgara lie north and northwest, respectively, of Salams. Off the much indented coast of Salams, Athenian naval and land forces achieved a crushing victory over a massive Persian naval force in 480 BC.
