town, eastern Rajasthan state, northwestern India. Sawai Madhopur, a walled town, was laid out on a plan somewhat similar to that of Jaipur city by Madho Singh, maharaja of Jaipur (175168). The town is a major road and rail junction and trades in metalware and agricultural products. It is noted for its handmade copper and brass vessels, lacquered woodwork, papier-mch objects, round playing cards, and a scented extract of khas grass. It also has food-processing and cement factories. In the region, wheat, corn (maize), rice, barley, gram, sugarcane, and oilseeds are the chief crops; lead, zinc, silver, and bentonite deposits are worked. Pop. (1981) town, 28,139; metropolitan area, 59,083.
