born Feb. 3, 1890, Sankt Gallen, Switz. died Sept. 25, 1969, Zrich Swiss physicist who collaborated with Peter Debye in the development of a method of X-ray diffraction analysis. The DebyeScherrer method is widely used to identify materials that do not readily form large, perfect crystals. Scherrer spent most of his life in Zrich, where he was professor of physics (191660) and director (192060) of the Physics Institute of the University of Zrich. In recognition of his contributions to solid-state, quantum, and nuclear physics, he was appointed president of the Swiss Atomic Energy Commission in 1946.
