in full John G. Shedd Aquarium, one of the largest indoor aquariums in the world. Built with funds donated by John Graves Shedd, a prominent local businessman, the aquarium opened in Chicago in 1929. It contains more than 200 exhibition tanks, housing in excess of 5,000 specimens of 560 species of fishes (both freshwater and marine) and other aquatic animals from around the world. The total water capacity is more than 10,800,000 litres (2,850,000 gallons). A special display called the Coral Reef Exhibit features a tank that circulates 340,000 litres of seawater per hour and contains more than 300 Caribbean marine animals, including nurse sharks, sea turtles, moray eels, and numerous rare and colourful varieties of fish. The Shedd Oceanarium, a major addition completed in 1991, is the world's largest indoor marine-mammal pavilion and exhibits whales and dolphins in a pool holding 8,000,000 litres of water.
