SINGITIC GULF

Meaning of SINGITIC GULF in English

Modern Greek Singitiks Klpos, also called Klpos Ayion rous, the larger and deeper of two gulfs extending into the southeastern Chalcidice peninsula of Greek Macedonia. It is formed on the west by the Sithona prong and on the east by the yion Mountain (Akt) prong. Toward the head of the gulf is the islet of Ammoulian, opposite which on the isthmus of the yion Mountain prong of the peninsula are the silted-up remains of a canal completed by Xerxes in 480 BC, linking Ieriso Gulf with the Singitic Gulf. Few villages and ports lie on the Singitic Gulf. Dhafn is the main port along the gulf and serves the monastic community of Mount Athos. Ouranpolis grew from a small fishing village to a major tourist centre with many hotels for travelers exploring Mount Athos.
