SOR-TRONDELAG

fylke (county), central Norway. It extends from the Swedish border (east) to the coast of the Norwegian Sea (west). The mouth of the deeply indented Trondheim Fjord lies in the northern part of the fylke; parts of the Dovre Mountains are in the south. Adjacent to the Norwegian Sea coast are the large islands of Hitra and Frya. The fylke's economy is based on fishing and agriculture in the rural areas, while shipping and manufacturing are predominant in and around Trondheim (q.v.), the county seat and one of Norway's principal cities. Area 7,271 square miles (18,831 square km). Pop. (1996 est.) 257,079.
